Strong Redshift Clustering of Distant Galaxies1

چکیده
We present initial results from a redshift survey carried out with the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph on the 10 m W. M. Keck Telescope of a eld 14.6 arc-min 2 in solid angle. In the redshift distribution of the 106 extragalactic objects in this sample we nd ve strong peaks, with velocity dispersions of 500km s ?1. There is evidence for a non-uniform areal density of objects in at least two peaks. These peaks have characteristics (velocity dispersions, density enhancements, spacing, and spatial extent) similar to those of nearby galaxy structures (e.g., walls and clusters), and these are expected in a survey of this kind. We suggest that the prominence of these structures in our survey relative to that in other surveys can be attributed to our K-selection and dense sampling.

The Evolution of the Tully–fisher Relation of Spiral Galaxies1
We present the B-band Tully–Fisher relation (TFR) of 60 late–type galaxies with redshifts 0.1 − 1. The galaxies were selected from the FORS Deep Field with a limiting magnitude of R = 23. Spatially resolved rotation curves were derived from spectra obtained with FORS2 at the VLT. High-mass galaxies with vmax & 150 km/s show little evolution, whereas the least massive systems in our sample are b...
متن کاملThe Angular Clustering of Distant Galaxy Clusters1
We discuss the angular clustering of galaxy clusters at z > 1 selected within 50 deg2 from the Spitzer WideInfrared Extragalactic survey. We employ a simple color selection to identify high redshift galaxies with no dependence on galaxy rest–frame optical color using Spitzer IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 μm photometry. The majority (>90%) of galaxies with z > 1.3 are identified with ([3.6]− [4.5])AB > −0.1 ...
متن کاملThe Most Distant Galaxies
I review selected current observations of distant galaxies and our interpretation of the fragile (and occasionally contradictory) data. Galaxies at the “contemporary limit” of technology and redshift (z ∼ 6) are difficult to locate in the first place. Moreover, the large redshift may push some critical confirming and/or interpretative analysis toward unfamiliar IR wavelengths. I will concentrat...
متن کاملGalaxy Cluster Correlation Function to Z ∼ 1.5 in the Irac Shallow Cluster Survey
We present the galaxy cluster autocorrelation function of 277 galaxy cluster candidates with 0.25 ≤ z ≤ 1.5 in a 7 deg2 area of the IRAC Shallow Cluster Survey. We find strong clustering throughout our galaxy cluster sample, as expected for these massive structures. Specifically, at 〈z〉 = 0.5 we find a correlation length of r0 = 17.40+3.98 −3.10 h −1 Mpc, in excellent agreement with the Las Cam...
